Weather, Road Conditions, and Safety

The trip to and through Mammoth can be hazardous during snow and ice conditions. Here are some quick tips to help you prepare for your trip:

Highway Driving and In-Town Travel:

• During winter, snow chains are often required in the Town of Mammoth Lakes and on the US 395. Be sure to carry chains and know how to install them.
• Highways are sometimes closed due to unsafe conditions. Please use the following links to get up-to-date info as you plan your travel:

• In town, streets and drives can be impassable in snow and ice. Please be sure to carry chains and know how to install them. It is a good idea to carry a snow shovel, water, and warm clothing in case of  emergency.
• To get around town safely in the snow and freezing weather, consider using the free Mammoth Shuttle. The shuttles are dependable, tho they may be delayed in blizzard conditions,. For more info, map and schedules, click here. ​

• Around your rental:
• Due to snow, ice and freezing conditions, be cautious on the balconies and walkways which are prone to icing.
• Be aware of falling snow and ice from buildings roofs. Do not stand under roof eaves.
• Parking is restricted in many areas of town. Read signs carefully before parking.
• Local snowplow/shoveling providers work very hard but it is difficult for them to keep the drive and walkways clear during heavy snow cycles. They generally plow at the end of a snow cycle, or if 6 inches has accumulated.
