In the summer, guests sometimes struggle to find a nicer home, like ours, that also provides a pool. Because of the climate and short summer season, pools are not very common at private, smaller, upscale complexes or homes.

But the good news is that if you want more than the hot tubs provided with our rentals, there are plenty of places  in and around Mammoth Lakes to dip your toes in water -- and even put your booty in the sand.

Horseshoe Lake

Swimming Lake Super Close to our Homes and Free to Public:
You may know that many of the lakes in Mammoth provide drinking water for the town. And for that reason, swimming in those lakes is not allowed.

But there is an easily accessible lake in Mammoth that will keep your whole group happy with tons of activities. There's plenty of sand, sun, and even shady hikes to keep your family busy for an entire day. So b
ring a picnic, a kayak or SUP, even your dog. There's accessible parking and public restrooms to make your day even more pleasant.

There are tons of thing to do around the Lake, including rock climbing, easy hiking, even more challenging hikes that will take you to Arrowhead or points beyond.

Wondering why so many trees are dead at Horseshoe? Read more here. And if you visit Horseshoe, be sure to check out and follow the CO2 warning signs.

To get there: Take St Mary road uphill, all the way to the dead end.

Whitmore Pool

Spring-fed, Town-Maintained, with Lifeguards On Duty
If you're traveling with kids who won't swim in a Lake, or if you are planning a trip to the Upper Owens River or Benton Hot Springs anyway, Whitmore Pool might be the best choice for you. Although it is south of town, the location off Benton's Crossing Rd provides 360 degree, breathtaking views of Mammoth's mountain ranges and wide-open spaces.

Whitmore, home to the Mammoth Lakes swim team, is a spring-fed pool operated by the Town of Mammoth Lakes that provides a six lane, 25-meter pool, children's wading pool, restrooms and hot showers. There are also usual recreation area amenities like BBQ area, lawn and concessions. They offer scheduled lap swim, lessons and camps during the summer,

Hike and Swim at Arrowhead

One of our favorites is the hike to Lake Arrowhead but there are plenty of swimmable lakes within a short hike of Mammoth.

Lake Arrowhead is great because of the large boulders and deep water, which make a perfect place for rock jumping. To read more about the Lake Arrowhead hike, including hiking instructions, click here.

Please note: You must personally evaluate this activity for safety. Lake levels vary based on snow melt and season. Rock jumping is not a safe activity for everyone and may not be safe for anyone in some seasons.

Other Swimmable Lakes, just a hike away:
  • McLeod Lake
  • Crystal Lake
For hiking instructions, check our link to Mammoth's hiking app, here.

Swimmable beach on the Scenic June Lake Loop
June Lake Beach
Mono County tourism says: "Swim, sunbathe, kayak, SUP, picnic or play frisbee in June Lake, California. Equipment rentals are available rent most days in summer. Bright blue water and a cool breeze comes off the bordering mountains for stunning scenery at lake level.... Pass through a campground area and low brush before coming to the beach parking lot."

End of June Lake Beach Road, off Northshore Drive, off Hwy 395 (June Lake).
