Ok, call me a tacky tourist, Ugly American, whatever. But its safe to say that my kids are counting the days until the uber-tacky Mammoth Mega Zip zipline opens.
And its not just my kids. I CAN NOT WAIT to try this myself with The Husband riding right next to me. I'll never forget the time my girlfriend told me, "You should check out the bowling alley. It just opened and its really cool." Yah, right, I thought to myself. How cool could a bowling alley possibly be? But you know what? She was right.
If you're looking for a day of true mountainside adventure, there's nothing like challenging yourself with a day of climbing a mountainside, or at least a really big rock slab on a mountainside if you're a beginner like me.
What if I told you that on your drive to Mammoth you're within an hour of the oldest living things on Earth?
What if I told you that those living things grow next to fallen, visible, naturally-preserved wood that pre-exists the pyramids, earliest civilizations and even the ice age? Another great day geological/naturalist day trip north of Mammoth is an exploration o the extra-terrestrial Mono basin, Mono Lake and ancient volcanic craters. For a full day, start at the Mono Basin National Forest Visitor's Center and then trek out to explore the Lake with its tufa towers, and hike to some of the craters.
Find the perfect trail using Mammoth's QR systemI often get requests from guests for suggestions on hiking trails beyond the simple trails close to Sonenalp. But the trails system in Mammoth offers so many options, its hard to know what's best for each guest group. Whether you want to drive, climb, hike, or walk, the Mammoth Trail Systems offer limitless opportunities at every skill and fitness level. With some 300 miles of soft-surface, paved, and mixed-surface trails the Mammoth Lakes Trail System connects to the extensive Inyo National Forest off-highway road network. With this many options, there's something for people of all ages and interests...
For full details and link to the app, click Read More. One of our sons is a dedicated fly fisherman, so we've spent lots of time -- and too much money -- at the local fishing supply stores. Our favorite by far is the Troutfly/Troutfitter, probably because it's the largest fishing store and guide service in the Eastern Sierras. Best of all, its a dedicated fishing store, not an 'outdoors sports' store with a mediocre supply of fishing equipment stuck in the corner.
I was shocked to learn that they do more business through their online store than they do in person. It seems counter-intuitive that a store with so many personable guides and expert staff would be known for internet sales. Still, not a week in Mammoth goes by that we don't find ourselves braving the crazy-tiny parking lot to stop by the Troutfitter to chat with the staff, load up on high quality fishing supplies, and get the scoop on where to find the fish that day. If you need fishing supplies while you're in Mammoth, or if you simply want to check out what's new in gear, wear and flies, The Troutfitter is the place to go. To visit the Troutfitter website, click here . For the Troutfitter's Fishing Report, click here. We've also gotten to know several of the local guides pretty well. A couple of our favorites are: Otis: 760-937-1865 Mike: 619-756-4149 or bigtroutday@gmail.com
