Because we do a lot of shopping and errands in Bishop, I’ve spent a lot of time exploring, and one thing is clear: this small town packs a big punch when it comes to food. From classic comfort dishes to international flavors and local bakery delights, these restaurants are my go-to spots whenever I’m in town. Whether you’re passing through, flying in, or spending a weekend exploring the Eastern Sierra, you’ll want to check these out.
Thai Thai RestaurantLocated right at the Bishop Airport, Thai Thai offers a welcoming atmosphere and delicious Thai dishes made fresh. Locals love the curries and noodle dishes, and it’s a perfect stop before or after a flight.
Amigos Mexican RestaurantAmigos is a long-time Bishop favorite for hearty Mexican food and friendly service. Don’t miss the famous Acapulco chicken, and make sure to grab a container of house-made salsa to take home — it’s the best! If the weather is good, and your group is smallish, make sure to eat al fresho in the back garden.
Back Alley Bowl & GrillA local hangout that combines great food with fun. The Back Alley serves steaks, burgers, and seafood in a casual setting — plus bowling and a full bar. As unlikely as seems, the steaks are the best in Bishop. It's perfect for a night out or post-adventure meal.
Holy Smokes BBQ & CateringThis popular BBQ joint serves up tender smoked meats and hearty sides. My family often orders large family-style servings to take home. If you’re in a hurry, the Redneck Taco is a favorite. Slow-smoked brisket, ribs, and pulled pork are all delicious.
Erick Schat’s BakkeryA Bishop landmark since 1938, Schat’s is famous for its “Sheepherder Bread®,” baked fresh daily in stone ovens. My favorite is the Mule Kick Sandwich, which they often have ready-made in a cold case — perfect for travelers in a hurry. Don’t forget to grab a loaf of Monkey Bread or other sweet treats while you’re there!
I'm gonna be totally honest, I was skeptical about this place. Seriously-- I feel that way about almost anyplace that has the word 'outlet' in the title. So yah, I profiled this place based just on the name. And later, when they started building, I was even more concerned. Location, lack of parking, size all confirmed my worries. But man, was I wrong-- at least about some of it.
There are lots of reasons that I love heading to the backside of Mammoth Mountain-- sunny afternoons, no crowds, long runs, fresh snow, breathtaking vistas, wind protection. But my favorite reason head to the Northwest face is The Outpost. (Fair Warning: Getting to the backside is a commitment and you will need to take the inexplicably speedy, tiny-chaired, 2-man lift #12).
How long has this desolate little trailer been sitting there on the corner next to The Fun Shoppe? Too long.
So when I rolled into town and saw smoke billowing from behind it, I worried for a milisecond that after years of deserted neglect it had caught fire and was going down in a blaze of glory. The Breakfast Club is one of the first landmarks as you drive into town along the 203. So if you're starving, and looking for the first available food, this might be a good choice. We were starving, just rolling into town, and needed a place to sit outside with our dog so for us it fit the bill.
Some restaurant sites are cursed. You know what I mean. Once a building is tainted by terrible food, it just seems that all new restaurants that try to open in that space are doomed to fail.
So when I saw that The Warming Hut was opening where a so-unfortunate-it-shall-not-be-named restaurant used to be, I felt regret for this new place, fearing it would always be overshadowed by the painfully mediocre (at best) food and service that came before. If you're looking for a quick, filling, yummy meal to take back to Sonenalp, Salsa's might just be the best option in town. Be sure to go there hungry, but don't go in a hurry. There is usually a line, and food is made to order so it isn't the fastest meal in America. But its worth every second.
