Village Ski Back Trail

7/29/2023

Picture

While many visitors to Mammoth Lakes spend their days conquering the slopes at the ski resort, the Ski Back Trail offers a unique way to cap off a day of skiing or snowboarding. This trail allows skiers to bypass the crowded lifts and the need to take an equally crowded shuttle back to the main lodge. Instead, you can glide directly back to the heart of town from the slopes. (skill and weather dependent)

The Ski Back Trail starts at the summit of Mammoth Mountain, near the top of the Panorama Gondola. From here, skiers are treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the vast valley below. It's a perfect opportunity to snap some photos and create lasting memories before beginning the descent.

The Descent
The journey down the Ski Back Trail stretches approximately 2.7 miles (4.3 kilometers) and offers a mix of challenging sections and more leisurely slopes. While beginners might find some parts a bit steep, intermediate and advanced skiers will revel in the excitement and opportunities for some off-piste exploration.

The trail winds its way through a picturesque alpine landscape, with snow-covered trees and serene winter scenery surrounding you. The tranquility of the surroundings is a refreshing contrast to the bustling ski resort, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in the beauty of nature.

Safety and Preparation
It's essential to be well-prepared before embarking on this adventure. Here are some important tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey:
  1. Check Trail Conditions: Before starting your descent, check the Mammoth Mountain app about trail conditions and weather forecasts.
  2. Skiing Ability: Assess your skiing ability honestly. While the trail is open to skiers of varying skill levels, beginners may find some sections challenging. If you're unsure, use the Village Gondola, shuttle service to get back to The Village.
  3. Proper Gear: Ensure you have the right skiing gear, including appropriate clothing, helmet, and goggles. Carry essentials like water, snacks, and a trail map.
  4. Daylight Hours: Plan your descent during daylight hours to make the most of the incredible views and avoid skiing in the dark.
  5. Avalanche Safety: Be aware of avalanche risk in the backcountry. It's always best to check with local authorities or ski patrol about current conditions and potential hazards.

So, the next time you find yourself wondering how to get back to town, take a break from the usual routine and discover the magic of the Ski Back Trail.
