A recent guest, Susan, was interested in the summertime scenic gondola rides that Mammoth Mountain offers. I'll be honest, the only time I've been to the 11,000 foot summit was on a set of skis so I needed to do some research to answer her questions about summer visits. Here's a little bit about what I learned:

Mammoth Mountain offers single-trip sightseeing journeys to Mammoth's iconic summit, with an intermediate stop at McCoy Station.
The Ride: The gondola departs from Main Lodge's Adventure Center, which is located at Main Lodge, 10001 Minaret Rd. From there, the ride stops at McCoy Station and at the summit. Riders can hop on or off at McCoy, at an elevation of 9,600 feet.

At the top: You will find gorgeous, 360 degree views of the Sierras, the Eleven53 Interpretive Center and Eleven53 Cafe. The Interpretive Center features displays, a movie theater, and interactive exhibits on volcanic history, geology, weather patterns, wildflowers and critters, cultural heritage of the Eastern Sierra region. Knowledgeable docents are available to answer your questions.

Hike Down: You can choose a one-way trip with a 5-mile, fairly challenging hike back down, or ride in both directions. You can even ride back down to McCoy Station to launch your hike, and cut your hike to 2 miles if the 5-mile trek is just a little too daunting. If you do choose to hike, remember to fill your water bottles at McCoy or the Summit before you start your descent.
