Traveling with Pets to Mammoth and the Eastern Sierra

Although Mammoth is known as a dog-friendly town (and it IS!), in recent months town has begun to enforce the existing leash law. That means that you won't be able to let your pet roam as freely as we all once did. In fact, if your dog is found off-leash within town limits, you can be cited. And yes, that includes all the old favorites like Shady Rest, the Propane Tanks, Lakes Basin, even the Scenic Loop area.

Although Town cites a recent spike in dog bite incidents for the increased enforcement, it is also a result of a massive amount of dog poo left all over town, and requiring hours and even days of cleaning to remediate. Mammoth Trails Coordinator, Joel Rathje, who rallies an army of volunteers each spring to pick up tons of poo (literally) in Shady Rest park: “People need to take personal responsibility for their pets. Bottom line … It’s our basic responsibility as pet owners in developed recreation sites.”

A few rules reminders for Adventure Refined properties:

• Pets may not be left alone in our properties unless kenneled.
• As per ADA requirements, service animals should never be left alone and should always be under the direct control of the handler.
• Pet or service animals are not allowed on the furniture.
• Pet or service animals must be treated for fleas and ticks and be up to date on all vaccinations.
• Pet parents should be aware of local risks to pets such as wildlife and pests.
• Pet or service animals must be supervised and leashed in common areas including the foyers, garage, and any shared spaces.
• Pet parents must clean up your animal’s waste. Leaving waste, even in bags, can attract bears. Always dispose of waste in a bear-safe dumpster.
• Evidence that rules were not followed will result in resolution center fees and/or loss of deposit.
